This sermon opens a series on the identity of Jesus and walks through the first scenes of Mark’s Gospel (Mark 1 and 2): the teaching in the Capernaum synagogue, the healings at dusk, and the paralyzed man lowered through a dismantled roof. The labels people reach for, teacher, healer, turn out to be true, yet suddenly far too small when Jesus speaks of forgiving sins. Listen and ask whether your picture of Jesus has quietly settled into a safe category.

Who Is Jesus?
Questions are like keys. They open doors, prompt us to seek answers, and lead to important discoveries. Some of these questions are more important than others, because so much depends on them. One of the most important questions is: Who is Jesus? Was He a fraud who deceived His disciples and then millions of people around the world? A madman suffering from delusions of grandeur? Or was He who He claimed to be? Who was He? In search of the answer to this question, we embark on a journey through the Gospel of Mark, because we know that so much depends on this answer.
