A smoke-filled room, cards in sweating hands and the moment when everything has to be staked on one card. That image opens a reflection on the story of Elijah and the widow of Zarephath in the seventeenth chapter of First Kings (1 Kings 17), two people whom God leads to a place where, humanly speaking, there is neither logic nor security. The sermon asks it plainly: why should I trust God when his word takes me against every instinct of common sense, and it points to the answer hidden in the faithfulness of his promises. As we go through life, we hear many different voices. We ignore some of them, while we pay more attention to others. From this cacophony of sounds, we must choose the right ones, because so much in life depends on whom you listen to.
However, in the daily hustle and bustle, it’s easy to miss the most important voice-the voice of God Himself.
In the story of the prophet Elijah, everyone faces the same challenge:
Will they listen? Will the king listen? Will Israel listen? And even-will the prophet himself listen?
In this story, full of noise and conflicting voices, there are those who not only heard but also listened. Sometimes they are the least likely people.
But the most important question is:
Will I hear-and will I obey?
