Is your scepticism really your own, or did someone simply pass it on to you? This sermon takes us to Mount Carmel, where Elijah does not argue the Israelites into belief but proposes a test that is fair to both sides, then deliberately makes it harder for himself by drenching the altar during a drought (1 Kings 18). It turns out that truth is revealed not by argument but by testing, and truth, once recognised, begins to demand something of us, whatever the circumstances. Listen if you have the courage to examine not only other people’s convictions but your own.

As we go through life, we hear many different voices. We ignore some of them, while we pay more attention to others. From this cacophony of sounds, we must choose the right ones, because so much in life depends on whom you listen to.
However, in the daily hustle and bustle, it’s easy to miss the most important voice-the voice of God Himself.
In the story of the prophet Elijah, everyone faces the same challenge:
Will they listen? Will the king listen? Will Israel listen? And even-will the prophet himself listen?
In this story, full of noise and conflicting voices, there are those who not only heard but also listened. Sometimes they are the least likely people.
But the most important question is:
Will I hear-and will I obey?
