A trader started mixing sawdust into the mules’ oats, a little at first and then a little more, and for a long time nobody noticed the difference. Dishonesty rarely begins with a great fraud, more often with a pinch of something nobody sees. That story opens a sermon about the eleventh chapter of Proverbs (Proverbs 11). The writer speaks there plainly of false scales that are detestable to the Lord, and of how integrity leads by a straight road while cunning finally turns against a man’s own house.
