There is a story about a bridge builder who spent one night sleeping under his own construction, because that was the only way he could tell whether he really trusted it. It is easy to build things you never test on yourself. That story opens a sermon about the eleventh chapter of First Kings (1 Kings 11). Solomon built the temple and gained wisdom admired by the whole world, and then step by step allowed himself more and more, until his heart turned away from God, and it was small concessions rather than one great decision that decided it.
