In an old joke a husband explains that in his marriage he takes the big decisions and his wife the small ones, and adds that so far there have been no big ones. It amuses us until we notice how many people genuinely do not know who decides about their lives, or on what basis. That joke opens a sermon about Rehoboam and the division of the kingdom (2 Chronicles 10). The new king was given sensible advice by the elders, chose the advice of his own contemporaries, promised his people a harder hand and lost ten tribes in a single day.
