At a polar station in Antarctica the doctor Leonid Rogozov developed appendicitis and had nobody to turn to, because he was the only doctor for thousands of kilometres. So he operated on himself, using a mirror, with two colleagues handing him instruments. That story opens a sermon about young Solomon’s prayer (1 Kings 3). God offers him whatever he wants to ask for, and he asks for an understanding heart, because he knows there are situations in which knowledge and courage are not enough. We want to learn not only about the history of his reign, but also to discover the timeless wisdom hidden in his Proverbs. And all of this is so that we may know how to live wisely and end our lives wisely.
